WITandWISDOM(tm) - June 2, 2000 ~~~~~~~ THOUGHTS: "People count up the faults of those who keep them waiting." - An old proverb Source: Bits & Pieces, February 2, 1995, Copyright (c) Economic Press - www.epinc.com/ via http://www.witandwisdom.org ~~~~~~~ SPECIAL THOUGHTS: One day a friend of Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph, said to him, "Professor, when you were making your experiments, did you ever come to a place not knowing what to do next?" "More than once," Morse replied, "and whenever I could not see my way clearly, I knelt down and prayed to God for light and understanding." Then Morse added: "When flattering honors came to me from American and Europe on account of my invention, I never felt I deserved them. I had made a valuable application of electricity, not because I was superior to another men, but solely because God, who meant it for mankind, must reveal it to someone, and was pleased to reveal it to me." In May, 1844, the first message to be sent over the telegraph, dispatched by Morse himself between Washington and Baltimore, were the words: "What hath God wrought!" The ravine is too steep to go down and climb back up. You need to know if the bridge is safe. As luck would have it, you recognize that on the other side of the bridge is that dreadful town, "Truth and Liarsville". Everyone who lives there either ALWAYS tells the truth or ALWAYS lies. You are tired and you've been lost in Truth and Liarsville before. You see three men on the other side of the bridge. You shout out: "Are you truth-tellers?" The first man says something, but you can't hear what he said. The second man shouts, "He said he was a truth-teller." The third man shouts, "No, he didn't. He said he was a liar." Which man do you ask to find out whether or not the bridge is safe? THE ANSWER IS BELOW . . . THE ANSWER IS BELOW . . . THE ANSWER IS BELOW . . . No matter what, the first man would always say he is a truth-teller. If he is a truth-teller, of course he would say "yes". If he is a liar, he would still say he is a truth-teller. This means that the second man told the truth. Ask the second man whether or not the bridge is safe. Applying for a job one time, the employment application clearly stated: "Age of Father (if living)", and the same query for my Mother. I put down the figures 105 and 94 in the spaces provided. The interviewer asked if my parents were truly that old. I replied, "No, but they would be if they were still living."
