WITandWISDOM(tm) - November 11, 2003 ISSN 1538-8794 ~~~~~~~ THOUGHTS: "The farther back you can look the farther forward you are likely to see." - Sir Winston Churchill Source: Weekend Encounter, by Dick Innes, Copyright 2003, http://www.actsweb.org/subscribe.htm ~~~~~~~ SPECIAL THOUGHTS: "It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag." - Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, Sergeant, USMC Submitted by Sherri Rimmer ~~~~~~~ THIS & THAT: Sitting on my front porch one night, I waited for my wife to return from choir practice. When a car pulled up in front beyond the hedge and a driver got out, I called to my wife, "Hi, sweetie!" To my surprise, a male voice called back, "Hi", and the driver proceeded to walk across the street to a neighbor's home. About 45 minutes later, I again thought I heard my wife return. Not wanting to make the same mistake twice, I called out, "Is that you, honey?" "No," rang out the same male voice, "it's me -- sweetie!" Source: The Sixth Sense - The Sense of Humor ~~~~~~~ KEEP SMILING: The new father ran out of the delivery room and announced to the rest of his family who were waiting for the news: "We had twins!" The family was so excited they immediately asked, "Who do they look like?" The father paused, smiled, and said, "Each other." Because that's the anniversary of the end of World War I. Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day. In 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor ALL US veterans, not just those that fought in World War I. Source: Health, November 2003, http://www.health.com But didn't Veterans Day used to be in October? For a short period, yes. In 1968, legislators changed the date of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October, but it was changed BACK to November 11 a decade later because Americans wanted it that way. The November 11 date was too significant to be overlooked. Source: DailyInBox: Trivia, http://your.dailyinbox.com/trivia/ |
