WITandWISDOM(tm) - February 16, 2005 ISSN 1538-8794 ~~~~~~~ THOUGHTS: "One of the secrets of a long and fruitful life is to forgive everybody everything every night before you go to bed." -- Bernard Baruch Source: DailyInBox From the Masters, http://dailyinbox.com ~~~~~~~ SPECIAL THOUGHTS: Our fifth-grader needed new pants for his school uniform. After a few minutes in the store where we had always purchased them, I found three pair and placed the neatly folded pants on the checkout counter. The clerk scanned the tags; I paid with my debit card and walked to my car. I rarely look at the receipt after making a purchase, but this time I took the receipt out of the bag. That's when I noticed the clerk had made a mistake - I was undercharged! According to the world's standards, being over-charged calls for a "go back" response while being undercharged means "take off!" But I try to live my life by God's standards, and so I returned to the store. "I just purchased these three pair of pants, Ma'am, but you charged me for only two," I said, as I took the pants out of the bag and handed the clerk the receipt. The woman looked at the receipt, then looked at me, surprised and smiling. "Oh, you are a very honest man," she said in accented English. "I did not see the pants in the middle!" After I paid an additional $12.99, she said, "I would like to give you something. You may choose any item here." She pointed to a rack behind her. Without paying close attention, I pointed to a small, blue key chain with white lettering. Later, I looked closely at the key chain and gasped in pleasant surprise. The initials read "WWJD" - What Would Jesus Do. I sat there astonished, feeling a tremendous sense of satisfaction that I had done the right thing - I did what Jesus would have done. Jesus lived a life of strict integrity - He didn't cut corners, cheat, or sacrifice principle for personal profit. He was always honest - even when no one was watching. That key chain reminds me of the peace that results from being honest - whether in business transactions or relationships. It reminds me that the best standard to live by is summed up in four letters - WWJD. It should be thrown with great force. - Dorothy Parker I am a kind of paranoiac in reverse. I suspect people of plotting to make me happy. - J. D. Salinger Ninety-eight percent of the adults in this country are decent, hard-working, honest Americans. It's the other lousy two percent that get all the publicity. But then--we elected them. - Lily Tomlin Stoop and you'll be stepped on; stand tall and you'll be shot at. - Carlos A. Urbizo Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff. - Frank Zappa The way to write American music is simple. All you have to do is be an American and then write any kind of music you wish. - Virgil Thompson Source: Quotes of the Day, http://www.quotationspage.com/qotd.html ~~~~~~~ KEEP SMILING: A farmer goes into a store to buy chicken wire..... Farmer: I'd like 10 yards of chicken wire. Clerk: Haven't you heard? We've gone metric. We sell things by the meter now, not the yard. Farmer: (Thinks about it) OK, I'd like 10 meters of chicken wire. Clerk: Right. Is that with the half-inch or quarter-inch holes?
