WITandWISDOM(tm) – October 22, 2007 ISSN 1538-8794 ~~~~~~~ THOUGHTS: Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not. - Ralph Waldo Emerson Source: Carol's Thought for Today, http://home.comcast.net/~mrs.carol/ ~~~~~~~ SPECIAL THOUGHTS: In his May 1, 2002 church newsletter, Pastor Victor Pentz of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, tells about the time that then Vice President George H.W. Bush represented the United States at the funeral of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. "Bush later told how he was deeply moved by a silent protest carried out by Brezhnev's widow. She stood motionless by the coffin until seconds before it was closed. Then, just as the soldiers touched the lid, Brezhenev's wife performed an act of great courage and hope, a gesture that must surely rank as one of the most profound acts of civil disobedience ever committed. In the midst of the funeral for the head of state of the Soviet Union, she reached down and made the sign of the cross on her husband's chest." "In this citadel of atheistic power, the wife of the man who had run it all hoped her husband was wrong. She hoped there was another life, and that that life was best represented by Jesus who dies on the cross." "Today Christians around the world continue to bear witness to Christ in hostile environments, sometimes at great cost to themselves and their families... They need our prayer and support." As the meeting was getting ready to start, the CEO notices a young man leaning against the wall, clearly caught up in his own daydreams. The CEO marched over to him and barked, "How much money do you make in a week?" Shocked, the young man nervously answered, "About $300 a week." The CEO pulls out his own wallet, rips out twelve $100 bills, hands them to the young man and says, "Here's four weeks pay. Now get out of here and don't come back!" Knowing he now has everyone's attention, the CEO turns and asks the group, "Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-off did around here?" With a sheepish grin, a secretary mutters, "He's the pizza delivery guy from Domino's." Visiting a woman with a new baby, he decided to practice the language and said, "My, what a lovely baby you have!" The woman looked at him in shock, so he repeated it again, louder. After leaving the house, a friend told him what he had really said: "My, what a lovely negligee you're wearing." Jane Williams, who runs a tortoise sanctuary from her home in Colchester, uses a handheld scanner to hunt down her 60 animals, reports the East Anglian Daily Times. The tracker device is attached to their shells with a removable sticky pad. Ms Williams said: "I think they are absolutely fantastic. Contrary to popular belief tortoises can actually move quite fast. "They are real escape artists. They can climb walls, hide in bushes and bury themselves. We find them in all sorts of unusual places. It is amazing how difficult it can be to find them." Source: Ananova http://www.ananova.com |
