~~~~~~~ SPECIAL THOUGHTS:
"Are you crazy?" bystanders shouted as Alex Bien-Aime, a 33-year-old immigrant, raced toward a tangle of three crushed cars blazing along Miami's I-95. Bien-Aime didn't hesitate.
Our January 1999 article "Against the Flames" reported how he smothered flames on state trooper Marisa Sanders and singlehandedly pulled a couple from a burning pickup. But when he returned to his own car, steam was billowing from under the hood. It was damaged beyond repair.
Back in his tiny apartment, alone and with little money, Bien-Aime didn't know what to do. He was already working, going to college and supporting his wife, Aline, and children back in Haiti. He worried about Aline's health; doctors suspected cancer. Every dime counted. And now this.
Within weeks of reading our article, readers sent hundreds of letters offering jobs, money (more than $13,000) and prayers. One delivered a Honda Accord - used, but in fine condition. Others arranged for Aline to come to Miami, where a medical evaluation revealed a benign growth.
Readers also wrote to U.S. government officials to support the immigration of Bien-Aime's family. Consul General Roger Daley even invited him to the U.S. embassy in Haiti to discuss the matter. Aline, Alexandra, ten, Anderson, nine, and Stephanie, three, joined Alex in Miami in March of 2000. Says Bien-Aime, "I would like to say a beautiful thanks, heartfelt, to your readers. There are good people in the United States."
~~~~~~~ KEEP SMILING:

My boyfriend and I met online and we'd been dating for over a year. I introduced Hans to my uncle, who was fascinated by the fact that we met over the Internet. He asked Hans what kind of line he had used to pick me up.

Ever the geek, Hans naively replied, "I just used a regular 56K modem."

~~~~~~~ TRIVIA:
Based on Microsoft's current stock price, Bill Gates is worth about $32 BILLION. That's a lot of dough! It's almost too difficult to wrap your mind around. The creators of this Web site came up with unique and funny ways of expressing it.
For example, Bill has enough money to give every person in the world $5.17 and still have over $9 million left for incidentals. If he were a country, he'd rank 56th in gross domestic product. That's just below Morocco, but ahead of Ukraine. Wow!
